SK Group subsidiaries will join Google, Apple, and Ikea in a global renewable energy campaign dubbed RE100 that calls for companies to use renewable energy fully by 2050.
The eight subsidiaries, SK Telecom Co., SK hynix Inc., SKC Co., SK Siltron Co., SK Materials Co., SK Broadband Co., and SK IE technology were set to submit their applications to the Korea RE100 Committee on Monday.
If The Climate Group accepts their applications, SK Group's eight units will become formal members of RE100 and the first South Korean companies to take part in the campaign.
About 260 companies have already joined the campaign launched by London-based nongovernmental organization The Climate Group in 2014.
Within a year after becoming members, the subsidiaries should submit plans to meet the RE100 requirements and be assessed on their implementation every year.
According to the SK Group, they have deals with renewable energy power producers and state-run Korea Electric Power Corporation to let them expand their utilization of renewable energy.
