ATLANTA, Sept. 15, 2016 -- Shepherd’s Men, a group of servicemen and one civilian dedicated to raising funds and awareness for the Atlanta-based Shepherd Center’s SHARE Military Initiative, proudly announce their next venture in support of post-9/11 veterans who suffer from Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The “Run to the Hill” event, sponsored by Southern Company, will begin on Thursday, September 22, in Washington, DC, and continue through Friday, September 23.
“Run to the Hill” centers on a 22-hour run around Capitol Hill, a timeline that represents the 22 veterans who take their own lives each day as a result of TBI and PTSD. The event will kick off at 1:45 p.m. on September 22 with a short introductory program in front of the Supreme Court on the northeast lawn of the U.S. Capitol. At 2:22 p.m., a member of the Shepherd’s Men will lead the first group of runners along the designated 2.2-mile route.
Every hour for 22 consecutive hours, members of the Shepherd’s Men will lead groups of runners, made up of congressmen, veterans and the general public, along the loop in an effort to engage Congress in conversations about and influence change for our country’s military veterans adjusting to civilian life. “Run to the Hill” will conclude with the final lap at 12:22 p.m. on September 23.
The Shepherd’s Men invites the general public to participate by running in solidarity or simply cheering on the runners. The event’s home base will be located at 300 Massachusetts Avenue NW Washington, DC 20001.
In addition to “Run to the Hill,” the Shepherd’s Men host the annual Shepherd’s Men Run during which they run 22k a day for nine days to raise awareness for the Shepherd Center’s SHARE Military Initiative. The only one of its kind in the country, the SHARE Military Initiative is a comprehensive rehabilitation program that focuses on assessment and treatment for servicemen and servicewomen who have sustained mild to moderate TBI and PTSD from combat in post-9/11 conflicts.
