South Korea's 5G users reached 7.86 million in July, up 487,190 from the previous month, to account for 11.3 percent of the country's 69.8 million mobile subscriptions.
The increase in 5G users boosted the total number of mobile accounts by 174,197 in July from the previous month.
Meanwhile, the country's 4G users accounted for 54.9 million mobile subscriptions in July, down 15,054 from the previous month.
South Korea first offered 5G in April last year and is eyeing to deploy nationwide coverage of the network by 2022.
Major telecom operators intend to spend up to 25.7 trillion won to update infrastructure and meet the deadline.
The government has also met with the telecom operators to expand 5G coverage in remote rural areas by sharing their networks.
Local 5G subscriptions are poised to grow with new 5G phone releases in the second half, such as Samsung Electronics Co.'s Galaxy Note 20 and the new iPhone from Apple Inc.
