Russian troops are steadily advancing toward the strategic city of Kostiantynivka in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, signaling a renewed push to gain ground near one of Ukraine’s most heavily fortified defensive zones. According to Ukraine’s top military commander, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Russian forces are attempting to establish positions on the outskirts of the city using infiltration tactics, while Ukrainian troops continue counter-sabotage operations to repel the offensive.
Kostiantynivka is part of Ukraine’s so-called “fortress belt,” a network of fortified cities designed to slow Russian advances in the east. Despite these defenses, battlefield monitoring group DeepState reports that Russian units are now within approximately one kilometer of the city’s southern edge. Some nearby areas have been labeled as “grey zones,” indicating contested territory where neither side has full control.
Russia’s Ministry of Defence recently claimed control over the settlement of Novodmytrivka, located just north of Kostiantynivka, while General Valery Gerasimov stated earlier this year that Russian troops were advancing from both northern and southern directions. Syrskyi noted a significant increase in Russian assault activity in April, with at least 83 attacks carried out in recent days, often involving small infantry groups.
The intensified fighting comes amid ongoing tensions over territorial control in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Russia continues to demand that Ukraine withdraw from areas it still holds, a key issue that has stalled U.S.-mediated peace negotiations. Ukrainian officials have consistently rejected any proposal involving territorial concessions.
Meanwhile, Russia claimed to have captured the village of Myropillia in the northern Sumy region, though Ukrainian forces have denied this, calling the report false and asserting continued control. In the same region, a Russian airstrike near Krovelets reportedly injured six civilians, highlighting the ongoing humanitarian impact of the conflict.
As the war enters another phase, Russia’s slow but persistent advances underscore the prolonged and grinding nature of the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
