Russia reported one of the largest Ukrainian drone attacks on Moscow and surrounding regions in more than a year, leaving at least four people dead and several others injured. The large-scale overnight assault targeted multiple Russian regions, including the capital city, highlighting the escalating tensions in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
According to Russian authorities, three people were killed in the Moscow region, while another fatality was recorded in the Belgorod border area. Moscow regional Governor Andrei Vorobyov said a woman died after a drone strike hit a residential house in Khimki, north of Moscow. Emergency crews continued searching through the wreckage for another possible victim.
Vorobyov also confirmed that two men were killed in the village of Pogorelki in the Mytishchi district, where several apartment buildings and local infrastructure facilities suffered damage from falling debris and explosions.
Russian state news agency TASS reported that air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 81 drones approaching Moscow overnight. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that at least 12 people were injured during the attack, with many casualties reported near Moscow’s major oil refinery. While several nearby homes sustained damage, officials confirmed that the refinery’s key operational systems remained unaffected.
Russia’s defense ministry claimed that a total of 556 drones were shot down across various regions overnight and into Sunday morning, making it one of the largest aerial assaults since the war began. The attack also disrupted transportation services after drone debris fell near Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport, though airport operations continued without significant interruptions.
The incident renewed concerns about geopolitical risks, energy market volatility, and the broader impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on global oil prices, including WTI crude and Brent crude markets.
