RBI Poised for First Rate Hike in Nearly Four Years

The Reserve Bank of India is generally expected to increase its repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% at its October 7, 2026, policy announcement, the first increase in almost four years following 125 basis points of cuts in 2025. While taking a small increase to its FY27 growth estimate from 6.7%—supported by first quarter 7.8% development—the Monetary Policy Committee will probably stay neutral.

Rising inflation is fuelling expectations of stricter policy: consumer price inflation reached 4.82% in August, while high oil prices and a weak rupee contribute to imported price pressure. The RBI's flexibility may also be limited by worldwide tightening and plentiful banking-system liquidity. The committee is projected to raise its FY27 inflation projection above 5.0%, and investors will be on the lookout for any change toward a more hawkish direction or further liquidity-absorption techniques.

Though oil prices and world market mood remain significant elements, a rate rise may push government bond yields higher in the short run, weigh on rate-sensitive equities, and help the rupee some. Economists project a slow tightening cycle beginning with 50 to 100 basis points of total increases by early FY28 based on inflation and outside factors.
