Pew survey: Americans’ list of concerns with China

The US President Donald Trump is set to meet his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on April 6th and 7th.  The meeting would be held in President’s Mar-a-Lago resort. This is President Trump’s first face to face meeting with the Chinese President. According to President’s Trump’s own words, the duo would discuss a range of issues from trade deals to North Korea, as well as the situation in the South China Sea. During the campaign, President Trump has been very critical of the kind of deficits the United States’ running with China and after the Presidency he and his team have vowed to reduce the gap between exports and imports.

As the White House prepares to welcome President Xi, Pew Research Center has published an opinion survey which details out the list of concerns the American respondents had with regard to China. According to the report,

  • 89 percent of the survey respondents were either very worried or somewhat worried about the high amount of American debt held by China.
  • 85 percent are worried on the cyber-attacks from China. The same number of respondents was also worried over China’s impact on the global environment.
  • 84 percent were worried about the US job losses due to China.
  • 81 percent were worried about the large trade deficits with China.
  • 79 percent were worried on China’s policies on human rights.
  • 73 percent of the respondents were worried over the territorial disputes between China and its neighbors.
  • 66 percent were worried on disputes between China and Taiwan.

That same survey also showed that 47 percent of the respondents had unfavorable views towards China compared to 44 percent having favorable views.
