PS5 Is Definitely Coming… In 2020, Maybe

The internet has been abuzz with reports, rumors, and speculations about Sony potentially revealing the PlayStation 5 this year for weeks now. Some new developments have recently shed some light on this particular issue, with a former Sony chief and some inside sources making some things more likely and some less so. For example, a 2018 release is extremely unlikely while a 2020 window is possible.

First is the comments by Sony Interactive Entertainment chief Andrew House, who recently spoke at the recent GamesBeat conference. While dodging questions about the future of the PlayStation console, he said that he didn’t think the PS4 was going anywhere anytime soon. He has the same thoughts about the console industry, in general.

“I’m very bullish on longer life cycles for consoles,” House said. “Consoles are so under-represented and under-penetrated in so many markets around the globe. There’s so much potential. Let’s not forget that China is still largely [untapped].”

So there’s that source done with. There was never any chance that House was going to spill the beans on Sony’s biggest secrets. On the other hand, there are other wells of information to tap into and Kotaku has been doing that for a while.

Apparently, of the many developers and insiders that the publication has approached for details, none were willing to commit to a 2018 release timeline for the PS5. In fact, they don’t think it will even be announced for a few more years.

This can always change, what with the industry always shifting under everyone’s feet. However, sources in different branches of the industry, from art to engineering haven’t been briefed on the existence of the console yet.

If the PS5 already exists and is nearly out of development, at least someone would have been told about it in order to pave the way for its release. So far, this just hasn’t happened.
