NEWPORT NEWS, Va., March 01, 2016 -- Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE:HII) announced today that its SN3 subsidiary has opened a field office in Cumbria, located in northwest England. SN3’s new office in the Innovation Centre Westlakes Science and Technology Park will focus on radiological waste project opportunities at the Sellafield site and across the United Kingdom. Company leadership joined community and business leaders in Cumbria today to officially open the office.
“We are excited to join the Cumbria community,” said Pete Diakun, who oversees SN3 as Newport News Shipbuilding’s vice president of energy programs. “SN3 has long-established nuclear decommissioning, site management and nuclear new-build expertise in the United States, and we believe we can bring both value and best practice to the U.K. nuclear market. We will support current market initiatives to deliver better project value to U.K. tax-payers and make long-term investments in the future of the region through collaboration with strategic local and U.K. partners.”
SN3 will also collaborate with sister company UniversalPegasus International (UPI), an engineering design and project management company serving global oil and gas markets, including the North Sea, to bring a fresh approach and technological expertise to respective decommissioning and new-build design projects.
“With so much growth anticipated in the Centre of Nuclear Excellence here in Cumbria, it is fantastic to see strong international firms like SN3 choose to make their U.K. base here,” said Michael Pemberton, CEO of Britain’s Energy Coast, which owns Westlakes Science and Technology Park. “Their presence will add valuable skills into the supply chain here and offer increased local employment. We are delighted to welcome them to the science park.”
From the operation of nuclear production facilities at Savannah River to site remediation and waste management at Hanford, SN3 manages complex projects that are crucial to national security, advancing science and technology and protecting the environment. With a half-century legacy of safe performance, SN3 earned the first nationwide, multi-site Department of Energy Voluntary Protection Program STAR award.
