SANTA CLARA, Calif., Nov. 09, 2017 -- Fog World Congress, the first multi-day conference and exhibit on fog computing and networking, today announced the conclusion of the first successful conference. Over the course of the three-day event, corporate leaders joined technology innovators, esteemed research institutions and academia to discuss key challenges and opportunities in fog computing and collaborate on inherent challenges. This unique balance of industry and research is critical to propelling fog computing and networking forward.
During his session at the conference, Christian Renaud, research director, IoT at 451 Research, shared that the fog computing market will reach $18.2bn by 2022. While fog will benefit many industries, energy and utilities is currently the largest fog opportunity, followed by transportation, healthcare and industrial—all of which will reach the billions within the next five years. ‘Fog as a Service’ business models will also grow between 2018 and 2022, more than doubling from 14% in 2018 to 37% in 2022.
Fog World Congress provided the platform for 400 attendees to share their own perspectives on the growth of the market and the industries it will benefit. There were 22 research papers presented and more than 87 speakers, covering evolving trends, including fog as a solution to Internet of Things (IoT) latency, bandwidth and networking requirements, increasing deployments of fog as an early-stage technology and how fog and edge can work together as complimentary technologies. The conference also held sessions on the development of standards for fog computing and networking.
One of the highlights from the conference was the “Fog Tank,” where five innovative finalists squared off and presented their innovative fog-focused technologies and company visions to a panel of venture capitalists. The winner was Nebbiolo Technologies, an early-stage startup working on enabling cloud-like flexibility and real-time controllability in IoT platforms.
“Fog World Congress was the world’s largest convening on fog. As we saw over the course of the conference, there is growing interest in fog and the crucial role it plays in enabling emerging technologies,” said Dr. Tao Zhang, General Chair of Fog World Congress. “It was a productive conversation around fog-related strategies, deployments and results that allowed for networking and collaboration between academia, government, industry and technology, and gave attendees the opportunity to look toward the future.
