The world’s first hydrogen-powered inland container vessel, H2 Barge 1, will begin operation in June, transporting Nike products to Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Nike’s European Logistics Campus in Belgium.
Nike is partnering on the initiative with Dutch shipping company Future Proof Shipping, BCTN Network of Inland Terminals, and hydrogen provider Air Liquide.
The US sports goods manufacturer estimates that H2 Barge 1 could help reduce 2,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year.
According to Eb Mukhtar, Vice President of Operations and Logistics – Nike EMEA, Nike’s ultimate goal is to create a zero carbon, zero waste future.
Mukhtar added that the H2 Barge 1 is an example of the company's investment in sustainable progress across logistics and transportation.
