New government on the way in Poland

In Poland, general elections are due 25 October. The new election will bring the current opposition Law and Justice (PiS) to power. A comeback from the current government coalition leader Civic Platform (PO) is very hard to imagine. Mr Kaczynski is still running the PiS but no longer takes a front position.

"The PiS will most likely need a junior coalition partner, which could be the junior coalition partner of the current government, the Polish Peasant's Party (PSL), unless some of the more right-wing parties get enough votes to enter parliament", says Nordea Bank.

Instead President Duda, who surprisingly won the presidential election in May, seems to contribute with continued positive momentum from the presidential campaign. PO on the other hand has lost a number of key people including former PM Tusk to the EU and a number of ministers who resigned after the so-called "Waitergate".

"The economic policies will be more or less unchanged under a PiS-led coalition, but even with some election promises being honoured the fiscal stance will remain decent. The primary balance is only slightly negative and government debt is well below the critical thresholds at 55 and 60% of GDP", added Nordea Bank.
