New “The Handmaid’s Tale” Trailer Shows Elizabeth Moss’ Life Before And After Totalitarian Regime; Shows Modern Political Parallels

Anyone watched the new trailer for Hulu’s highly-anticipated series “The Handmaid’s Tale”?

The trailer showed snippets of the life of Offred, a Handmaid whose role in the totalitarian regime of Gilead (formerly known as the United States) is to breed and sire children for the rich. The “Mad Men” star also narrated in the trailer, which showed her life at the time before the regime, and the wave of persecution and oppression that led to the regime, /FILM noted.

The Independent noted her first words were quite creepy, considering the modern political parallels. In the book, the women are being treated as nothing more than just wives, servants, or breeders, like Offred. Although Offred is constantly abused and exploited to help repopulate Gilead, she remains steadfast in her fight for freedom and for the daughter and husband who were both snatched awat from her.

"I was asleep before. That's how we let it happen. When they slaughtered Congress, we didn't wake up. When they blamed terrorists and suspended the Constitution, we didn't wake up then either. Now I'm awake," she said.

The series is based from the 1985 novel by Margaret Atwood, who is also onboard in the project as a consultant, Digital Spy said. In a Reddit AMA, she said she was happy with the TV adaptation by “The 100”’s Bruce Miller. She also teased that there is more to the TV adaptation that’s what she wrote in the book.

She explained, "Based on what I've seen, it's a 1. My criteria: puddle of goo on the floor [by the] end of episode 3. Gasp. Shriek. It goes farther than I did in the book…"
