Michael Peña and Diego Luna's casting for “Narcos” season 4 has come as a welcome surprise when it was announced almost a year ago. The “Ant-Man” actor and “Rogue One” spy's entry into Netflix's acclaimed series inspired by real-life stories about international drug cartels may soften the blow of news that Pedro Pascal – who played DEA agent Javier Peña since the show's first season – will not be returning for its upcoming installment.
“Narcos” season 4, being billed as “Narcos: Mexico,” is looking to start a fresh chapter in the series by focusing on Mexico's Guadalajara cartel in the '80s. Fans who are worried that the drastic change in the series's setting and characters can be assured that the new cast will give them a new set of characters to become attached to even beyond the upcoming installment's run.
Diego Luna's Felix Gallardo is known in the real world as the leader of the Guadalajara cartel and the father of the modern Mexican drug trade. If it took at least two seasons to take down Columbia's Pablo Escobar (Wagner Moura), Diego Luna's long-lived Mexican drug-lord will have more time to shine based on his real-life drug kingpin career. But the same cannot be said about Luna's co-star for “Narcos” season 4.
Kiki Camarena, the Mexican-born DEA agent that Michael Peña will be portraying, is sure to be essential to the eventual legal takedown of Felix Gallardo's drug empire. The real-life Kiki Camarena was abducted, tortured, then killed by Gallardo's men while he was on assignment in Mexico. It was Camarena's murder that led to the DEA's Operation Leyenda, which was one of the agency's most intensive investigations that reached deep into the Mexican government's ranks.
Fans of the show can potentially expect “Narcos” season 4 to focus on the lead-up to Kiki Camarena'sabductionn and death while still leaving enough room for a potential fifth season that will follow the latter days of the Gallardo drug empire. Those who just cannot wait to see Diego Luna and Michael Peña in action can look forward to “Narcos” season 4 gracing the online streaming channels of Netflix on Nov. 16.
