‘Narcos’ Season 2, Episode 1 Updates, Spoilers: Netflix Premieres Exclusive 11-Minute Long Clip; Series Continues Following Death of Pablo Escobar

‘Narcos’ season 2’s episode 1 is set to follow the events after Pablo Escobar’s escape from prison as revealed in an exclusive 11-minute long clip dropped by Netflix. Meanwhile, executive producer Eric Newman admitted that he hoped for the show to continue even after Escobar’s death.

According to Rolling Stone, Netflix dropped an exclusive 11-minute clip of the incoming season’s first episode during a Facebook live broadcast on August 25. The clip was played out like a “live-to-tape” and opened to DEA agents Steve Murphy (Boyd Holbrook) and Javier Peña (Pedro Pascal) discovering secret tapes that chronicled Pablo Escobar’s (Wagner Moura) escape from La Catedral.

The next scene shows Escobar’s escape from prison amidst the chaos. Agent Murphy says in a voice-over, “Let me break it down for you: 4,000 soldiers, a 250-man team of elite forces, tens of thousands of rounds fired, seven dogs, and four f*cking helicopters. Pablo Escobar was surrounded in the middle of f*cking nowhere. There was no way he was getting out of this one… right?”

The footage then cuts to soldiers in the forest as they try to hunt down the notorious drug lord. As soon as they encounter Escobar himself, one of the soldiers says timidly, “Mr. Escobar, I’m sorry but we’ve been ordered to not let you through. We have to take you into custody.”

However, the kingpin calmly replies, “Son, I’m sorry to say… unfortunately, I can’t allow that to happen.” They then proceed to let him and his men pass unharmed.

Netflix’s original show chronicles the real-life story of Escobar as he battles for control of the cocaine market of the 1980s while also focusing on Escobar’s interactions with other drug lords, the government, and other opposing entities.

The series was announced on 2014, with a deal struck between Netflix and Spanish network Telemundo. Season 1 aired on August 2015 and received mostly positive reviews from critics. The show was nominated for a BAFTA TV Award for Best International Programme as well as two Golden Globe Awards nominations – one for Moura for Best Actor in a Television Series Drama and another one for Best Television Series Drama.

According to Variety, season 2 seeks to answer the nature of Escobar’s death. The real life agent Murphy said during the show’s premiere at ArcLight Cinemas in Hollywood, “This is going to sound cliche, but I think [executive producer] Eric Newman, Netflix, the writers did an outstanding job…  I have no problem with it. I think they have portrayed us as larger than life characters and it’s a little embarrassing, but also flattering.”

Meanwhile, Newman admitted that he hoped for the show to continue even after Escobar’s imminent death. He said, “I hope there’s life for the show after Escobar… Cocaine regrettably continues on. It is an ongoing story. I’ve always been interested in the Mexican story because it’s so big, I mean, beginning with Felix Gallardo and on from there.”

‘Narcos’ season 2’s episode 1 is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on September 2, 2016.
