Motorola faced some backlash last year when it announced that the 2020 Edge phones were only getting one Android OS upgrade. The response prompted the company to reconsider its decision and eventually announced that it will provide an additional year of upgrade support. Now, the company confirmed it will retain the same approach for the newly announced Motorola Edge 20 series.
Motorola clarifies software support timeline for Edge 20 series
The company clarified to Android Authority on late Thursday that the Motorola Edge 20 phones are getting at least two Android OS upgrades and bi-monthly security updates for two years after it launches. It was a different stance than what was reported earlier in the day after one Motorola representative suggested that the company would revert to providing only one OS upgrade.
As mentioned, Motorola already faced negative feedback last year for that approach. It is also worth noting that even Google advises manufacturers to offer at least two Android OS upgrades. But the first information appeared to be inaccurate.
The first company representative who talked to the publication reportedly implied that Motorola does not expect consumers to use the Edge 20 phones for the long haul. The same representative said, “If we do find that the device has a longer life cycle in the market, we’ll obviously review to see whether it needs more OS upgrades.”
Motorola Edge 20 specs, release date
The Motorola Edge 20 series launched on Thursday with three devices. The standard model features a 6.7-inch OLED display and 144Hz refresh rate. It is powered by Snapdragon 778G and supports 5G and Wi-Fi 6 connections. A triple camera array is placed on the rear composed of a 108MP main camera, 16MP ultra-wide lens, and an 8MP telephoto sensor. It has a 4000mAh battery with 30W fast charging and 8GB RAM + 128GB storage configuration.
The high-end Motorola Edge 20 Pro has the same display specifications but has a more powerful processor with Snapdragon 870. Its camera modules are almost the same as the base model, but its 8MP lens is a periscope telephoto sensor. It has a bigger 4500mAh battery but a similar fast-charging capacity. Both devices have a 32MP selfie camera.
A “lite” model is also included in the Motorola Edge 20 series. Its screen size is the same, but it only has a 90Hz refresh rate. It is powered by MediaTek Dimensity 720 and a 5000mAh battery. All three phones are confirmed to launch in August in Europe, Latin America, Middle East, and Asia.
