Meta has announced that it will acquire Manus, a Chinese artificial intelligence startup, marking another significant step in the company’s aggressive push to expand its AI capabilities across both consumer and business products. The deal, confirmed on Monday, underscores Meta’s strategy of strengthening its position in the highly competitive global artificial intelligence market, although the financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Manus, which is based in Singapore, is known for developing a general-purpose AI agent designed to function like a digital employee. The AI agent can independently perform tasks such as research, data analysis, and workflow automation with minimal human prompts. This focus on autonomous AI agents aligns closely with Meta’s broader vision of embedding advanced AI tools across its ecosystem, including Meta AI and other core services used by individuals and enterprises.
As part of the acquisition, Meta plans to operate and commercialize the Manus AI service while integrating its technology into a wide range of Meta platforms. This move follows a pattern of strategic investments and acquisitions by Meta as it races against other tech giants to lead in artificial intelligence innovation. Earlier this year, Meta invested in data-labeling company Scale AI in a deal that valued the startup at $29 billion and brought its young CEO, Alexandr Wang, into Meta’s AI leadership orbit.
Manus gained attention earlier this year after launching its AI agent and claiming that its performance exceeded OpenAI’s DeepResearch agent. The company actively promoted its product by completing dozens of tasks for users on X at no cost, helping it gain visibility and credibility in the AI community. Manus operates under Beijing Butterfly Effect Technology Ltd Co but is part of a growing number of Chinese technology firms that have established operations in Singapore.
This relocation trend reflects a broader strategy by Chinese companies to reduce operational risks amid ongoing Sino-U.S. geopolitical tensions. By acquiring Manus, Meta not only strengthens its AI portfolio but also gains access to cutting-edge AI agent technology developed within a rapidly evolving Asian tech ecosystem.
