Kyrie Irving is one of several talented players that will become free agents this summer. As such, rumors surrounding the Boston guard has been persisting for months, with the New York Knicks among the teams touted to snatch him up.
And now that the Boston Celtics have been eliminated for playoff contention, fans and analysts are wondering what’s next for Kyrie Irving. Will he be staying with the team or take his talents somewhere else?
Judging by the previous statement of the 27-year-old, it’s unlikely that he’ll be staying with the Celtics. While Kyrie Irving said that he'd be committing with the team, in the long run, that sentiment has changed in recent months, with the guard saying he doesn’t “owe anybody s***,” Slam reported.
And with their devastating loss against the Milwaukee Bucks recently, those chances have considerably decreased. Of course, this shouldn’t be taken as confirmation that Kyrie Irving will indeed be leaving the Celtics. After all, Irving is known for his erratic mood and opinion as evident by his up and down relationship with Lebron James.
As for what other Celtics players are saying about Kyrie Irving and his poor performance during the Celtics/Milwaukee series, it seems that they’re not solely blaming him for the loss. Marcus Smart recently said that blaming one guy for the team’s recent loss is “bulls***,” ESPN reported.
Smart went on to say that Kyrie Irving has been nothing but accommodating for them since his addition to the roster, adding that the guard was the one who adjusted with them despite his caliber and reputation. But there are those who aren’t fond of how Uncle Drew handled his tenure with the organization.
Former Celtics center Kendrick Perkins recently slammed Kyrie Irving and accused him of not taking his role seriously. Perkins also took shots at the guard’s ability to lead the team, essentially saying that Irving only shines when he’s paired with a superstar like Lebron James. Whatever Uncle Drew’s decision may be, it wouldn’t be long before fans and analyst finds out as his free is only a few weeks away.
