One of the biggest news that arrived for the gaming community in 2018 is the official release date of “Kingdom Hearts 3.” But that does not answer everything for the series’ dedicated fans as some of them are still hoping that a PC port could be in the pipeline.
It is important to note that from the very first “Kingdom Hearts” game released in 2002 up to “Kingdom Hearts 3” arriving on Jan. 29, 2019, no title was ever made available on the PC platform. But since “Kingdom Hearts 3” is regarded as the finale and was in development for almost a decade, there are speculations that maybe Square Enix will consider making an exemption.
For the record, Square Enix has not yet made any announcement about a “Kingdom Hearts 3” PC port. GameSpot noted that the video game company already made a remarkable change in strategy by offering multi-platform launch. The game was supposedly a PS4-exclusive until developers announced an Xbox One port in 2013.
Other than “Kingdom Hearts 3,” Square Enix has a pool of highly popular games that are yet to launch on the PC platform. In the case of this “Final Fantasy”-meets-Disney video game, so far, Square Enix has not totally dismissed the possibility for a PC port plus the fact that the company already did it for “Final Fantasy XV.”
In several occasions, company officials and “Kingdom Hearts 3” director Tetsuya Nomura have also implied somehow that a PC port is not off the table. It would certainly take some time, though.
Nomura addressed a report in 2017 that said “Kingdom Hearts 3” could be released in Nintendo Switch as well. “They misinterpreted the word ‘considering’ as to ‘it is possible to release’ and it spread out. ‘Other hardware’ is not limited to the Nintendo switch, and we will consider all of them after the release of the PS4 and Xbox One versions,” the game director explained.
Meanwhile, Square Enix lead programmer Takeshi Aramaki explained to RPS last February that “the rule of the company, the strategy” include launching their games on “as many different platforms as possible.” While “Kingdom Hearts 3” was not mentioned in the interview Aramaki did say they hope to do it to “as many of our games” and not just for “FFXV.”
