Alexandria, VA, June 27, 2017 -- SynGlyphX® the leading provider of interactive data visualization and discovery technology and John Carroll University's College of Arts and Sciences announced, today, a joint research effort. The research will focus on the efficiencies and effectiveness of glyph based visual analysis of data for users.
John Carroll University has been using SynGlyphX's software in its computer science program to explore and understand the benefits of data visualization as an aid to both the discovery of critical insights in data and in communicating findings to an audience.
"We became familiar with SynGlyphX® software two years ago, through work we did with their software to visualize and better understanding Swarm Intelligence data," said Dr. Daniel W. Palmer, of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at John Carroll. "Through that experience, we began using SynGlyphX® software in our classroom to help our students learn principles of data analysis and data visualization. Our collaboration with SynGlyphX® has been valuable for both the school and our students."
John Carroll students have created and used side-by-side comparisons of data within standard data analysis tools relative to SynGlyphX®'s visual analysis. "We saw that students found answers to questions using visual analysis in GlyphViewer™ faster than using spreadsheets," said Palmer. "In some cases, students could not find the correct answers in spreadsheets during the classroom exercise."
These classroom experiences prompted Dr. Palmer and the SynGlyphX® team to create a formal study of glyphs and their potential as a method of analysis.
Dr. Palmer and his team will work with SynGlyphX® to set up a series of experiments for a large number of subjects to quantify the effectiveness of three-dimensional, glyph-based data representations as compared to traditional spreadsheet and two dimensional, non-interactive representations. “Humans can absorb vast amounts of information in multiple ways,” said Palmer, “what we are interested in is how does that translate into increased comprehension of the data, and how much faster that comprehension can be achieved by presenting the data in different ways.”
SynGlyphX® interactive data visualization and discovery technology helps users make sense of the volumes of data generated every day. The proliferation of data, enabled by new sensors, increased storage capacity, and other technological developments, is actually inhibiting our ability to make timely, informed decisions. SynGlyphX® interactive data visualization and discovery software addresses this challenge by making it easier to see patterns, trends, and anomalies in complex data.
"SynGlyphX® is excited to collaborate with John Carroll University on this initiative," said Mark E. Sloan, CEO, SynGlyphX®. "Students, with a range of experiences with data analysis and data analysis tools, are helping us to see how visualizations expedite and improve our ability to benefit from our data. We're excited to continue working with JCU and other universities on this project and others like it."
