Japan's Lower House of Representatives voted to ratify the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement and passed a related bill on Thursday. However, prospects for the ratification of the pact by the United States following Donald Trump's victory in the presidential election look very slim.
The Trans-Pacific Partnership deal involving 12 countries - the US, Japan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Brunei, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Mexico, Chile and Peru aims to deepen economic ties between these nations, slashing tariffs and fostering trade to boost growth.
Both U.S. presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump were opposed to the deal, and Tokyo was desperate to pass the bill through the Lower House plenary session before Election Day so as to send a powerful message that Japan has no intention of accepting a request for renegotiations from the U.S. side.
