Western governments sharply criticized Israel after far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir released a controversial video mocking Gaza-bound flotilla activists detained by Israeli forces. The incident has sparked international outrage, with several activists alleging physical abuse and mistreatment while in Israeli custody.
The flotilla, carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, was intercepted by Israeli naval forces in international waters before the activists were detained and later deported. European countries including Italy, Spain, France, and Britain condemned the treatment shown in the video, calling it a violation of human rights and basic human dignity. Poland even suggested banning Ben-Gvir from entering the country.
Criticism also came from within Israel and the United States. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly stated that Ben-Gvir’s actions did not reflect Israel’s values, while U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee accused the minister of damaging the country’s reputation internationally.
Human rights organization Adalah claimed its lawyers documented multiple cases of abuse, including taser use, beatings, stress positions, sexual harassment, and injuries suffered by detainees. Some activists also alleged they were assaulted during detention. Italian journalist Alessandro Mantovani stated he was punched and kicked by guards after arriving at an Israeli detention facility. Another activist, Italian lawmaker Dario Carotenuto, claimed he was physically attacked as well. Israeli prison authorities denied all allegations, insisting detainees were treated according to the law.
The controversy comes amid rising political tensions in Israel ahead of possible early elections. Ben-Gvir’s video, which showed activists restrained with zip ties while he mocked them, appeared designed to appeal to nationalist voters. Meanwhile, flotilla organizers defended their mission, saying the humanitarian effort aimed to challenge Israel’s blockade on Gaza and deliver urgently needed aid.
