Clare County Council has approved plans by the Trump family to construct a new ballroom at Trump International Golf Links & Hotel in Doonbeg, located on Ireland’s west coast. The decision allows the development to move forward under strict environmental conditions designed to protect the rare Vertigo angustior snail, a tiny species safeguarded under a European Union habitats directive.
The Trump Organization submitted its application in December, seeking permission to build a 1,240-square-meter ballroom capable of hosting up to 320 guests. Eric Trump described the proposed venue as potentially “the nicest ballroom in the country,” highlighting its role in expanding the resort’s luxury offerings and event-hosting capabilities. The Doonbeg golf resort has been a significant employer in County Clare, providing up to 300 seasonal jobs during peak summer months. Many local residents credit the Trump family with supporting the local economy since acquiring the property in 2014.
Environmental groups, including Friends of the Irish Environment, raised objections to the development. They argued that further measures were necessary to improve conservation efforts for the protected Vertigo angustior snail, which inhabits sensitive sand dune ecosystems around the golf course. The council ultimately granted planning permission subject to 14 conditions, including the requirement that the resort submit a comprehensive conservation and monitoring plan for the snail population before any construction begins.
The approval comes after previous planning challenges at the site. In 2020, the Trump Organization was denied permission to build a sea wall due to concerns about potential damage to the dune habitat. Additionally, earlier court orders linked to the original 1999 development required the maintenance or improvement of the snail’s conservation status.
Although U.S. President Donald Trump placed the Trump Organization into a trust managed by his children while in office, he remains its beneficiary. The newly approved ballroom is significantly smaller than the White House ballroom proposal, but it represents a notable expansion of the Doonbeg resort’s event facilities.
