The photo-sharing social media platform Instagram just launched a new feature that basically allows friends to draw all over the pictures of their friends. Called “remixing,” the feature involves sending photos to their friends, who will then mess around with the image. Using stickers, texts, or doodles, users can keep sending editing pictures to each other back and forth.
In the announcement post posted by Instagram, the Facebook-owned social network provides the gist of what this new feature is all about. It would appear that it is intended to encourage more personal interactions on the platform, which mostly revolves around people posting up pictures and then everyone else commenting on them.
“Starting today, you can remix your friends’ photos — then send them back for fun conversations,” the post reads. “When viewing a photo message from a friend, tap the camera icon at the bottom and capture a reply. Your reply includes a sticker of what you’re replying to. Move and resize it, and add your own twist with stickers, text and drawings. You can remix photos back and forth for a fun visual of your conversation.”
As The Verge notes, using “remix” can seem confusing. However, its use is clear enough to see once members of the platform go off on it. The new feature is live as of now, so users can go nuts and send each other pictures that their friends can vandalize to their hearts’ content.
With regards to the potential results of this new feature, there’s no point pretending that users are only going to type or doodle sweet things on photos. An influx of lewd or potentially offensive edits is a likely event to come out of this development. Of course, there’s always the small chance that perhaps the internet will simply use this opportunity to express how much they appreciate their friends.
