India Election: Morning setback turns into humiliating defeat for Modi government by afternoon

Just a half year back, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was counting the opposition Congress Party leader Rahul Gandhi out calling him ‘pappu’; a small boy. But that ‘pappu’ is enjoying the last laugh today, as he not only led his Party to victory in three states and defeating BJP in all five state assemblies, he established himself as a serious contender to the Prime Minister’s position and proved many of his critics incorrect, who refused to accept him as a leader of the grand opposition alliance in the looming 2019 general election.

The elections also showed that Prime Minister’s Narendra Modi’s charisma that swept BJP to outright victory in 2014 general election is now a long-gone history as the government’s several unfriendly reforms such as the demonetization, hasty implementation of the new Goods and Services Tax (GST), as well as hardline towards India’s Muslim population and political attack on institutions like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

In five state assembly elections, people of India seems to reject Prime Minister Modi’s autocratic style of governance.

  • In Chhattisgarh, Congress won an outright majority with 66 of the 90 seats compared to BJP’s 14 seats.
  • In Madhya Pradesh, Congress would comfortably form the regional government by winning 115 of 230 seats, compared to BJP’s 105.
  • In Mizoram, 40 out of 40 assembly seats already declared and Mizo National Front (MNF) has won an outright majority with 26 seats followed by 5 for the Congress and 1 for the BJP.
  • In Rajasthan, Congress again won an outright majority by winning 103 of 200 seats, compared to BJP’s 68 seats.
  • In Telangana, Telangana Rashtriya Samithi (TRS) has won an outright majority with 87 seats, followed by 19 for the Congress and 1 for the BJP.
