Hanwha Q Cells, LG Electronics, and Shinsung E&G have joined the bidding for the first stage of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power's 2.1-gigawatt floating solar power plant project.
The first stage would account for 300 megawatts, and worth 660 billion won.
The plant, which will be able to power one million households, is worth worth 4.6 trillion won and would spread over more than 30 square kilometers in North Jeolla Province.
Hanwha Q Cells boasts Q.Peak Duo Poseidon modules, which are specialized for floating solar farms,.
It offers a peak power of 420 watts and an energy efficiency of 20.3 percent.
Poseidon modules perform about 10 percent better than typical modules, as water reflects light and cools down the modules.
Peak power is the highest power output a solar module can achieve.
Shinsung E&G, which will supply solar modules with peak power of 440 watts and energy efficiency of 19.8 percent to a 73-megawatt floating solar farm to be built by Hanyang starting next year, is another player in the race.
Meanwhile, LG Electronics, which doesn’t manufacture floating solar farm modules, has the technology is considering the return on investment and profitability.
Hyundai Energy Solutions is preparing to supply its solar modules specially designed for floating solar farms for the project but won’t bid directly.
