“Grey’s Anatomy” Season 16 appears to be a season of struggles and heartbreak, the polar opposite of what occurred in the fifteenth installment. One of the most compelling storyline to follow in the next entry is Jo (Camilla Luddington), and the journey she has begun.

Having come out and admitted that she needs professional help with her deep-seated trauma, Jo’s climb towards healing will be one of the core plots of “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 16. The surgeon’s story is a compelling one as it’s not only a battle for self-care but is also a sort of guide how to fix a relationship where one party is suffering from depression, TV Guide reported.

For years, Jo’s relationship with Alex (Justin Chambers) has been on the rocks as the former is unable to speak about the things that are troubling her. It was revealed in the fifteenth installment that Jo’s demons stem from two major life events. First, she had an abortion after suffering at the hands of an abusive ex-lover. And second, she learned that she’s actually a product of rape. “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 16 will be expanding more on this front and will show how Jo will handle things now that she has decided to speak about these deep-rooted issues finally.

For his part, Alex realized that he’s never going to be the solution for her and that only a mental health professional will be able to help Jo. However, it’s likely that Alex will act as Jo’s anchor in “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 16, highlighting the importance of a support system that is crucial in such a grueling process.

Showrunner Krista Vernoff spoke with THR and said that the healing process for Jo has already begun the moment she decided to seek help. But it’s not to say it’s going to be easy from here on out. Far from it, in fact. This is why Jo’s story is really important, especially with how prolific depression has become in today’s environment with the explosion of social media and the internet in general. The writers want to hammer home the message that mental healing only starts when open communication is established and that everyone should be able to express their own issues without the fear of being judged or criticized. As for the release date of “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 16, it’s scheduled to air this coming September.
