Global Geopolitical Series: Saudi Arabia denounces Trump’s Jerusalem decision at U.N.

Saudi Arabia’s envoy to the United Nations denounced President Trump’s last year’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Abdullah Bin Al-Maalami, representative of Saudi Arabia at the UN said that this unilateral decision by the United States is enough to spark tension in the Middle East and weakens the chances of finding a comprehensive solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict. He added that the United States’ unilateral decision is null and void, “The UN stressed that all Israeli measures regarding Jerusalem are null and void, and have no basis in international law.”

This is not the first time Saudi Arabia has publicly denounced President Trump’s decision on Jerusalem, however, insider reports and leaked conversation between an intelligence official of Egypt and popular TV persona suggests that both Saudi Arabia and Egypt were well aware of Trump’s decision well in advance and were reportedly on board with it.

Rumor also suggests that Saudi Arabia during a closed-door meeting with Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) President Mahmoud Abbas offered a solution where Abu dis in the outskirt of Jerusalem would be the capital of the future state of Palestine.

The denouncing is likely to be more of an eyewash as the pressure to denounce from some of the Muslim majority countries like Turkey, Malaysia have been moving higher.
