Global Geopolitical Series: Russia to stand by Iran on nuclear agreement

As the deadline to save the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), better known as Iran nuclear agreement looms ahead, Russia has announced that it is going to stand by Iran and stand up for the viability of Iran’s nuclear agreement. The action taken by the U.S. President Donald Trump threatens a premature end to the agreement this month. President Trump repeatedly called the nuclear agreement as one of the worst deals ever made and in October refused to recertify Iran’s compliance with the agreement. Trump needs to decide by mid-January whether to prolong the waivers on American sanctions against Iran’s oil exports under the nuclear deal or not.  And if he fails to sign the waivers, which needed to be extended every 120 days, the restrictions on Iran will be automatically re-imposed.

Iran has threatened to end the pact already twice this week in order to persuade the U.S President in signing the waivers and to pressure other world leaders to weigh on Trump. Russia, which is an ally of Iran announced its stance to stand by Iran when foreign minister Sergei Lavrov met with Iranian counterpart in Moscow yesterday. After meeting with Mohammad Javad Zarif, Lavrov said, “We note [the International Atomic Energy Agency] director general’s clearly-defined statement that Iran meets its commitments in full…..We will advocate for the viability of this deal and its most significant contribution to regional stability and to solving the issue of nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction”.

All countries except the United States have voiced support for the nuclear agreement.
