Global Geopolitical Series: Mega tariff on $60 billion Chinese goods might get announced by this Friday

Rumors in Washington suggests that the Trump administration is set to unveil new tariffs on Chinese goods worth as much as $60 billion as early this Friday. According to unconfirmed reports circulating in the media, the new tariffs would target sectors such as telecommunications and technology. It would also target China’s alleged abuse of intellectual property rights, where U.S. companies had to undisclosed technological secrets in order to do business in China.

However, the tariffs may not get imposed with immediate effect and just like the Steel and Aluminum tariffs, the administration would provide several weeks window to allow companies and the country to come to the negotiating table. A delayed approach could allow time for negotiations with Beijing to try to resolve trade issues related to the administration's "Section 301" probe into China's intellectual property practices before tariffs take effect.

The White House declined to comment when requested comment.
