Global Geopolitical Series: Iraq airstrikes ISIS positions coordinating with Syria

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi's office has confirmed that Iraq has conducted airstrikes in Islamic States’ positions in Syria describing the attack as a deadly one. The strikes were launched from the Iraqi side of the border. The Iraqi air force used F16 jets to cross into Syria and carry out the strikes, Brigadier General Yahya Rasool said. The General also said that the strikes were carried out in coordination with the Syrian government of Bashar-al-Assad.

While Iraq, which lost vast area in its fight with ISIS militants a few years back, has targeted militant positions in the past, the latest round of attack could very well mark the beginning of coordinated attack from Middle East countries.

With Saudi Arabia’s crown prince Mohammad bin Salman saying that his country is ready to take part in Syria offensive, we can expect more airstrikes and military presence in Syria by Middle Eastern countries.
