Global Geo-political Series: Russia vetoes U.S. proposal on Syria chemical weapons; gets its own blocked too

Russia called the United States’ proposal on Syria chemical weapons probe as flawed and unbalanced and vetoed it when it was put for a vote at the United Nation’s Security Council. It saw its own proposal on the issue get rejected hours after it had vetoed the rival U.S. proposal. While China and Egypt abstained, Bolivia joined Russia in rejecting the U.S. proposal. The vetoed US resolution on extending the JIM mandate was supported by 11 members of the Security Council. The U.S. and Russia both put forwarded their respective resolutions to the UN Security Council on how the OPCW-UN Joint Investigative Mechanism (JIM) should proceed with the investigation of alleged chemical weapons attacks in Syria, including the April incident in Khan Shaykhun, which saw a prompt response from the Trump administration, which fired several cruise missile targeting the airport from where the alleged chemical weapons attack was carried out.

The Russian proposal was voted down, receiving the support of only four Council members, while seven rejected it and seven abstained. The U.S., France, the UK, Sweden, Ukraine, Italy, and Uruguay voted against the draft.
