Global Geo-political Series: Palestine’s Abbas denounce Trump’s Jerusalem decision; warns of violence

Palestine’s leader lambasted the United States and President Trump after Trump announced U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Since 1967, both Israel and Palestine have been claiming Jerusalem as their capital, which is a holy city for Muslims, Christians, and Jews. Trump announced that U.S. is formally recognizing the city as Israel Capital and he has directed state department to make arrangements to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which might still take a couple of years. Calling Jerusalem the "eternal capital of the State of Palestine", the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas said on Wednesday that the US could no longer be a mediator in Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations. Abbas added, “The decision by President Trump will not change the reality of the city of Jerusalem and will not give any legitimacy to the Israelis on this issue….We will achieve national independence."

The status of Jerusalem has been the most contentious issue between the Israelis and Palestinians for decades, especially after Israel occupied East Jerusalem at the end of 1967 war with Syria, Egypt, and Jordon. The western half of the city was captured during 1948 Arab-Israeli war. However, Israel’s occupation is not recognized by the international community and at the United Nations.
