- EU, Catalonia, and Spain: After Catalonia’s regional leader Carles Puigdemont refused to give up on Catalonia’s independence bid, the Spanish government has announced that it would use a provision in the constitution, known as Article 155 to cancel Catalonia’s autonomy on Friday. Catalonia’s regional parliament will come together on Thursday to decide on the future course of action.
- Japan and Shinzo Abe: Incumbent Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is in for a landslide victory in the snap election held on Sunday.
- Iraq-Kurdistan: Kurdish opposition Party has called on leader Barzini to step down after Kurdish forces surrendered vast regions of Kirkuk to Iraqi forces without much fight last week.
- Islamic militant and Philippines: The Philippines military has ended the fight against militants loyal to Islamic State (formerly ISIS/ISIL) in the southern city of Marawi, the defence minister has declared.
- Slovenia election: Slovenian President Borut Pahor has won his second five-year mandate by a wide margin as he secured about 56.2 percent of the vote, beating his closest opponent by more than 23 percent.
- Italy and autonomous regions: Veneto and Lombardy, the two wealthiest regions of Italy, have overwhelmingly voted in favour of greater autonomy from the central government in Rome.
