Global Geo-political Series: Key updates from across the world

Here are some key events to keep a tab on,

  • Russia-German pipeline: The future of Nordstream 2 pipeline looks bleak as the United States is ready for a full-fledged opposition to the building. Speaking to journalists, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State John McCarrick said that the United States doesn’t see the possibility of the pipeline being built. If built, the pipeline will run under the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany, bypassing several European transit countries and delivering 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year from Russia to Germany. It is scheduled to be completed by 2019.
     
  • Korean Peninsula: The Japanese parliament declared Pyongyang’s missile tests an “imminent threat” to Japan. The upper house unanimously adopted a resolution condemning the North’s firing of an intercontinental ballistic missile that dropped into the sea inside Japan’s exclusive economic zone last week. The U.S. and South Korea have launched joint air drill in response to the missile test.
     
  • Saudi Arabia, and the Middle East: The new Saudi management is reportedly engaging more with Israel on intelligence sharing.
     
  • German election: Even after seven weeks since the Federal election, German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its sister party Christian Social Union (CSU) have failed to form a government. Germany’s main opposition party leader Martin Schultz is reportedly holding negotiations with Merkel. In a separate event, German President has held talks with Germany’s right-wing party Alternative for Germany (AfD), which has emerged as the third largest party and this year’s biggest winner.
