Global Geo-political Series: How world reacting to North Korea’s latest nuclear test?

It is widely being reported that North Korea tested a nuclear weapon over the weekend, just hours after Korea’s state news media, KCNA released photos of supreme leader Kim Jong-Un inspecting North Korea’s nuclear facility where a Hydrogen bomb was weaponized by mounting it onto an inter-continental ballistic missile (ICBM). On Sunday, North Korea’s state news agency confirmed that it has successfully tested an H-bomb.

How is the world reacting?

  • In response to North’s nuclear test, South Korea's military conducted a live-fire exercise early Monday. The combined drill carried out by the South Korean army and air force and intended to simulate a strike on North Korea's nuclear test site, involved surface-to-surface ballistic missiles and F-15K fighter jets hitting targets off the east coast of South Korea, according to a statement from the country's Joint Chiefs of Staff.
  • South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in, who was initially opposed to the deployment of U.S. anti-missile defense system THAAD is likely to approve further THAAD deployment.
  • Japan has also agreed to enhance further missile defense system.
  • US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said he is drafting tough sanctions against North Korea, adding "this isn't the time for just talk."
  • US President Donald Trump was leaving a church service for Hurricane Harvey victims when he was asked by a reporter if the United States would attack North Korea. "We'll see," Trump responded. President Trump took to twitter to condemn the test, “North Korea has conducted a major Nuclear Test. Their words and actions continue to be very hostile and dangerous to the United States..... ..North Korea is a rogue nation which has become a great threat and embarrassment to China, which is trying to help but with little success. South Korea is finding, as I have told them, that their talk of appeasement with North Korea will not work, they only understand one thing! I will be meeting General Kelly, General Mattis and other military leaders at the White House to discuss North Korea. Thank you. The United States is considering, in addition to other options, stopping all trade with any country doing business with North Korea.”
  • US Defense Secretary James Mattis told reporters in front of the White House that any threat to the United States, its allies or its territories "will be met with a massive military response, a response both effective and overwhelming." He added: "Kim Jong-Un should take heed of the United Nations Security Council's unified voice. All members unanimously agreed on the threat North Korea poses and they remain unanimous in their commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula ... We are not looking to the total annihilation of a country, namely North Korea, but as I said, we have many options to do so."
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, have agreed that it is important to prevent chaos on the Korean Peninsula and called for a diplomatic solution to the crisis, following news of the latest nuclear test conducted by Pyongyang. "The two leaders agreed to stick to the goal of denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula and to maintain close communication and coordination to deal with the new situation," the Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.
  • Both France and Germany have announced that the European Union is considering tougher sanctions against North Korea in response to latest H-bomb testing.
  • An emergency UNSC meeting has been requested and is scheduled to take place on Monday 10 am Eastern Time.
