Global Geo-political Series: EU leaders working to kill their own democracy

Some parts of the European Democracy are truly magnificent. Every party in the European parliament gets EU funding, including those who have been and who are critical of the bloc. But the fear of losing seems to have grappled the current leaders of the European Union so much that they are preparing to cut off funds to the far-right group of the spectrum. Four mainstream parties in the European parliament of 751 members are considering cutting off the funds to the far right groups which include Nigel Farage’s UK Independence Party, as well as Marine Le Pen’s National Front, and another 8 across the continent. In an attempt to tighten the screws on the far right group, the leaders of four political groups in the European Parliament last year launched an investigation into the Alliance over concerns that Parliament cash had been spent on a far-right conference in Stockholm last year which included anti-Semitic songs. The group has however denied the charges and said that they would move to the court if the funds are not disbursed.

Last year, in December, a rule got changed that demands the political groups to provide a guarantee from a triple-A rated bank and the far-right pro-Independence party has failed to provide so.

While it is easy to label certain party groups which pose threats to the current leaders’ political ambitions but it won’t be easy to label the millions of supporters to those parties.
