FxWirePro: India’s ruling BJP government suffers humiliating setback in regional elections

Results are coming out for five state assemblies in India, and so far, it is not looking good for India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government led by Narendra Modi. The results are making it clear that Indian National Congress (INC) remains the main opposition party under the new leadership of Rahul Gandhi, despite the ruling government counting them out after last parliamentary election, where it swept an outright majority riding on the Prime Minister’s charismatic image.

However, the Prime Minister’s charisma is now a long-gone history as the government’s several unfriendly reforms such as the demonetization, hasty implementation of the new Goods and Services Tax (GST), as well as hardline towards India’s Muslim population and political attack on institutions like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

In five state assembly elections, people of India seems to reject Prime Minister Modi’s autocratic style of governance.

  • In Chhattisgarh, 85 out of 90 assembly seats already declared and Indian National Congress has won an outright majority with 54 seats compared to BJP’s 24 seats.
  • In Madhya Pradesh, 223 out of 230 assembly seats already declared and Indian National Congress is tied with BJP with 107 seats each.
  • In Mizoram, 40 out of 40 assembly seats already declared and Mizo National Front (MNF) has won an outright majority with 28 seats followed by 7 for the Congress and 1 for the BJP.
  • In Rajasthan, 197 out of 200 assembly seats already declared and Indian National Congress is leading with 93 seats compared to BJP’s 79 seats. 101 seats needed for an outright majority.
  • In Telangana, 113 out of 119 assembly seats already declared and Telangana Rashtriya Samithi (TRS) has won an outright majority with 85 seats, followed by 17 for the Congress and 1 for the BJP.
