French Election: Frexit referendum in six months if Le Pen wins

The Front National leader Marine Le Pen said that the French will be presented with a referendum to decide whether to stay in the European Union or not within just six months after the election if she claims victory. Madame Le Pen has been a fierce critic of the European Union, which she calls as an anti-democratic union. She said, “As you know, an important part of my project is to regain our sovereignty and thus free ourselves from the anti-democratic rules of the European Union…..I give you six months of negotiation, at the end of which you will decide, by referendum, whether we belong to the European Union or not.” She also plans to cancel the Shenzhen agreement of no borders within two months and restore national borders of France.

Research from Edinburg University showed that more than half of the French respondents would like to have a referendum on the European Union, similar to that of the UK. Similar research by Pew Research Center showed similar findings; almost 62 percent of the respondents had unfavorable views towards the European Union.

If she becomes the president on May 7th, the impact on the financial markets and economy would be immense, it would be like Brexit and Trump victory punched together. The first round of election is on April 23rd.
