European Migrant Crisis: EU fears end of migration deal with Ankara after Erdogan referendum victory

Some members of the European Union, especially Greece is taking preparations to tackle large inflows of migrants after the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan claimed a narrow victory in a historic Turkish constitutional referendum which would provide more executive powers to the President. All Mr. Erdogan needs to do now is to win an election to grab those new powers.  The members of the European Union were openly critical of Mr. Erdogan’s referendum and his crackdown on oppositions after a failed coup attempt last year.

The relations went so bad that many officials of the Turkish government were not allowed to hold rallies in favor of the referendum in many EU countries and Mr. Erdogan compared that tactics of the EU to those of the Nazis’ in Germany. After the narrow victory, many in the EU fear that Erdogan will further harden its stance toward the EU and issue an ultimatum to the ongoing accession talks. At the height of the migrant crisis, the EU struck a deal with Turkey to provide visa-free access to the Shenzhen area and several multi-billion euros in order to assist Ankara with refugee crisis and Turkey, in turn, promised to take back refugees. The EU is yet to grant the Visa-free travel to Turkey as many leaders in Europe feel that Turkey doesn’t match the criteria.

Erdogan has vowed to bring back the death penalty in Turkey defying warnings from Brussels that such would end the accession talks between Turkey and the European Union. Erdogan is expected to issue an ultimatum to the EU over the migrant deal under which Turkey has taken millions of refugees within its borders. The second round of refugee crisis is knocking at the doors of the European Union.
