Donald Trump backtracked on one of his campaign promises that he would appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Hillary Clinton’s use of private email server. Through the most part of his campaign, he has been a fierce critic of Hillary Clinton’s use of a private server while she was the Secretary of the State, as well as the FBI investigation that refused to bring any charges. While her supporter chanted “Lock her up”, he promised to bring special prosecutor and investigate the FBI investigation. One of his key campaign promises has been to remove the corruption in Washington, like he said, “Drain the Swamp”.
However, he recently said that he doesn’t want to move ahead with the probe by appointing a special prosecutor as such a move would be too divisive and According to him, Hillary Clinton has already been through enough. But Mr. Trump is very wrong in his suggestions.
- Firstly, it would do damage to him in the future, when he runs for reelection. The move would also erode part of his support base. It would pose doubts over his intention to drain the corruption in Washington D.C .
- Secondly, the Clinton probe in congress is far from over. House oversight committee said, well before the election that the probe would continue, so it is not very wise for Mr. Trump to suggest how he prefers the outcome of the investigation.
- Finally, Hillary Clinton’s use of private email server is a matter of law not about the preferences of Mr. Trump. There has been gross negligence in the handling of classified materials. So according to the law, there has to be a prosecution. But so far, no one has been convicted and prosecuted.
One part of what Mr. Trump said is true that it would be divisive but even then he could’ve left the matter in the hands of congress and the FBI.
