Donald Trump Jr. has accused Google of engaging in "intentional election interference" after its Autocomplete tool failed to display results about the assassination attempt on his father, Donald Trump, which occurred on July 13. Trump Jr. took to social media to voice his concerns, alleging that Google’s omission was a deliberate act to influence the upcoming election in favor of Kamala Harris.
The 46-year-old posted a screenshot purportedly showing Google's search results for the phrase "assassination attempt on," which did not include any references to the attack on the former president. Trump Jr. called Google's actions "truly despicable," suggesting that the tech giant deliberately suppresses information to manipulate public perception.
A spokesperson for Google responded to the accusations, explaining that the company’s systems have protections against Autocomplete predictions related to political violence. The spokesperson noted that manual actions were taken to ensure these predictions did not promote harmful content. Google emphasized that while Autocomplete is designed to save time, users can still search for any information they seek. The company assured that they are working on improvements to keep their systems updated and continue providing high-quality information to users.
The incident has sparked a flurry of reactions on social media. Critics of the Trump family accused them of playing the victim and dismissed the allegations as baseless. Comments ranged from skepticism about the authenticity of the claims to outright mockery of Trump Jr.'s accusations.
As previously reported, the assassination attempt on Donald Trump occurred during a rally in Pennsylvania on July 13. The former president, aged 78, was shot in the ear, while the attacker, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was subsequently killed by the Secret Service. Trump later described the incident as a miraculous escape, stating that he was not supposed to survive the attack.
Following the incident, Trump praised the Secret Service for its swift response despite earlier criticisms about its failure to prevent the attack. He recounted the dramatic moments, highlighting the efficiency of the agents who neutralized the threat.
This controversy adds another layer to the ongoing tensions between the Trump family and major tech companies. The former president and his allies have frequently accused platforms like Google, Twitter, and Facebook of bias and censorship, particularly in the context of the 2020 election and its aftermath.
Donald Trump Jr.'s latest allegations are likely to inflame these tensions further, drawing attention to the role of tech companies in shaping political discourse. Whether these claims will have any substantial impact remains to be seen, but they underscore the deep mistrust between the Trump camp and Silicon Valley.
