‘Creed 2’ Actor Michael B. Jordan Offers New Updates on Sequel, Unsure About Start of Production After Being Cast in Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’

Michael B. Jordan starred in Ryan Coogler's 'Creed'; May return to reprise his role as Adonis Creed in the Sequel

‘Creed 2’ actor Michael B. Jordan offered a new update on the planned sequel in the ‘Rocky’ cinematic series. However, he admitted that he was unsure about the sequel’s start of production after being cast in Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’.

During an interview with Collider, Jordan offered a vague update on the continuing story of the spin-off Rocky Balboa film ‘Creed’. When asked about plans for the follow-up, Jordan replied, “I’m not sure yet. Honestly it’s another thing like he’s busy doing [Black Panther], I’m in this world, so I know it’s something that’s gonna happen. I’m not sure exactly when, but it’s something that we are talking about and thinking about because it’s such an important story.”

The 29-year old actor starred as lead protagonist Adonis Johnson Creed in director Ryan Coogler’s 2015 release. Adonis was introduced as Apollo’s illegitimate son who spent his growing up years in foster care and juvenile hall. He was later adopted by Apollo’s widow and lived a life of luxury while maintaining a steady white collar job until he went on to pursue his professional boxing career.

The 2015 film was intended as the seventh installment in the ‘Rocky’ sports drama series and was released to critical acclaim. According to The Numbers, it earned $173.57 million worldwide against a production budget of $37 million. It also featured Sylvester Stallone in the role of Rocky Balboa, who was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance.

It also starred Tessa Thompson, Phylicia Rashad, Tony Bellew, Graham McTavish, Wood Harris, Andre Ward, and Gabriel Rosado among others. It is unclear whether the other original cast members will be returning to reprise their roles for the planned follow-up.

According to an article on Fan Sided, the sequel was initially scheduled to premiere in theaters on fall of 2017. However, it seems that the film is set for another delay since Jordan’s casting as a villain on Marvel Studios’ superhero film ‘Black Panther’.

Jordan admitted the possibility of a second film during a previous interview. He said, "I think we're definitely going to see a Creed 2. I'm not sure when or the time frame, but you're definitely going to see a Creed 2… The way those characters kind of left off and the way you want to see how they turned out—that new family between Adonis and Rocky formed with Bianca—you kind of want to see how that plays out."

‘Creed 2’ is a planned sequel to Ryan Coogler’s critically-acclaimed film of the same name released in 2015.
