San Francisco-based technology company Chronicled announced that it has launched first-of-its-kind open registry for Internet of Things on Ethereum blockchain.

According to the release, the launch signals a major step ahead in the growth of the consumer Internet of Things.  The registry is built on Ethereum blockchain and stores the identities of physical items that were initially consumer goods and collectibles embedded with BLE and NFC microchips. The company has deployed approximately 10,000 tamperproof NFC & BLE chips.

“Chip companies, physical IP creators, and brands can now register and verify their BLE and NFC chips on a public blockchain. These tamperproof chips can be ordered today and are already being deployed in consumer goods." Ryan Orr, CEO of Chronicled said.

With the registry, interoperable digital identity is established and new, proximity-based opportunities for consumer engagement, becomes possible. The project has been open sourced by Chronicled under the Apache License.

Supported by the open registry back-end, the Bluetooth, and NFC functionality allows retailers and brands to engage with consumers. With the functionality, developers can leverage identity and proximity verification of a physical thing for powering bespoke user engagement experiences.

"Developers are invited and encouraged to build their own proprietary applications leveraging the public registry.  Importantly, the registry is an open source layer and is not proprietary to Chronicled, Inc.  It is a public good designed to outlive the lifespan of any company.  Brands, chip companies and developers utilizing the registry cannot be locked in, monetized or forced to cede control over business critical data and customer relationships," Samantha Radocchia, Chronicled's CPO said.

Presently, Chronicled is collaborating with various ecosystem partners including Blue Bite, Cellotape, Identiv, Silicon Labs, SmartTrac, among others.
