RALEIGH, N.C. , Nov. 20, 2017 -- Camp Corral, a leading advocate for military families, announced today that it has appointed Clark Frederick, a retired colonel in the Army Reserve, and Gary Bowen, dean of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work, to its National Advisory Council.
As members of the National Advisory Council, Fredrick and Bowen will lend their expertise to inform and advocate for Camp Corral’s mission, goals and activities.
Frederick currently serves as a member of the mortgage services division of the American Armed Forces Mutual Aid Association. He has held leadership positions in several companies and has served on the executive teams of start-ups as well as corporate entities. Frederick is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and received a master’s degree in information systems from the University of Southern California. He served for 20 years in the Army Reserve and 10 years in the Army on active duty.
“The effects of life as a military child often get overlooked, so I’m looking forward to bringing my experience as both a military leader and parent to support Camp Corral’s efforts,” he said.
Bowen, long-time faculty member and dean of the UNC School of Social Work, has worked with all branches of the U.S. military on a range of mental health and social services issues as well as consulted regularly with military policymakers, researchers and practitioners. He is active in many professional associations and was identified as one of 40 “high impact” social work scholars in a recent study.
“I’ve enjoyed having the chance to influence the support services provided to the military community, and I am excited to serve in this role to strengthen the resources available to military families,” said Bowen.
Camp Corral, a nonprofit organization for military families, provides a free week of summer camp to the children of wounded, injured, ill or fallen military service members. Camp Corral partners with camps accredited by the American Camp Association across the nation to provide activities that are fun, new and challenging under the watchful eye of highly trained staff. Additionally, a military and family life counselor is available at many of the sessions.
“We’re pleased to have Frederick and Bowen join the National Advisory Council,” said Leigh Longino, CEO of Camp Corral. “Together, they lend a great deal of personal and professional experience that will be extremely valuable to the families we serve.”
