Briferendum Aftermath Series: MEPs set stage to poach Scotland from UK or use as bargaining chip

Several members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are preparing the stage to take Scotland with the European Union or to at least bring it to the negotiating table as a bargaining chip for the European Union. Almost 50 MEPs from countries like Germany, Greece, Malta, France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Portugal and Hungary signed a letter that says, “Democracy and mutual respect are at the heart of the European project and so, whilst we are saddened by the vote of a small majority for the United Kingdom to leave the EU, we respect this as a democratic decision of UK citizens…..We recognize that this was not your choice however and that Scotland voted strongly to remain within the EU. The question of Scotland’s constitutional future and your relationships with the UK and the EU are for the people of Scotland to decide…… We regret that the UK’s Government has chosen to follow the path of a ‘hard Brexit’ and has so far refused to properly take into account the preferences of Scottish citizens in the withdrawal process…..Therefore, if Scotland were to become an independent country and decided to seek to maintain European Union membership, we offer our full support to ensure the transition is as swift, smooth, and orderly as possible.”

This letter comes at a time when the UK government is forcibly rejecting Scotland’s demand to hold another referendum in 2018. The leaders of the European Union have been trying to use the parts of the UK as negotiating chips. The EU leaders have openly after the Brexit letter said that they would support Spanish demand for Gibraltar which is currently a part of the UK.
