Bitfinex spokesman resigns due to ‘insane conspiracy theories’

Bitfinex, a leading Hong Kong-based cryptocurrency exchange, suffered a major hack this year in which it lost nearly $120,000 and since then it has tried to get back on its feet and return funds to its users.

The hack raised many unanswered questions and last month the exchange made efforts to reach a mutually agreeable arrangement with the hacker.

In a recent blog post, Zane Tackett, Bitfinex's director of community and product development, said that he has resigned from the company because of the  "draining nature" of the conspiracy theories surrounding the exchange.

“I have decided to resign because of the draining nature of dealing with the insane conspiracy theories, the vile people, and the incessant vitriol spewed at a team who have dedicated their life to bitcoin and creating the world’s best trading platform. Many of the most vocal critics of Bitfinex don’t want to see a healthy bitcoin ecosystem, they want to stir up shit and damage anyone they can to pump their referral links or just to stir up drama, i.e., troll”, writes Tackett.

He pointed out that he is the first employee to resign from Bitfinex after four years. Tackett applauded the exchange’s performance highlighting that it is the only exchange that surpassed $100,000,000 in 24hr trading volume on multiple instances.

Speaking of the hack, he appreciated the way Bitfinex dealt with the attack and praised its efforts to find a solution to repay users.

“We had a big screw up; we were subject to a theft of 119,756btc…I sincerely hope that another theft of this degree never occurs and that no other exchange will ever have to deal with that, but the way in which Bitfinex did deal with it, I honestly believe was the most superior way of handling it”, Tackett said, adding that if users had their BFX and sold today they would have recovered ~85% of their funds.
