Bitcoin entrepreneur Charlie Shrem is back with new venture

[The article has been updated with inputs from the official release]

Bitcoin evangelist Charlie Shrem and Jason Granger have come together for a new venture that aims to offer new ways for cryptocurrency users to invest, CoinDesk reported.

According to the official release, the organization will consist of two companies, Mainstreet Investment L.P., a Cayman Island limited partnership, of which 30 percent will be owned by token holders and a controlling stake, 70 percent, owned by Intellisys Capital LLC, which will be based in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Granger is CEO of the controlling company in this venture, Intellisys, and Shrem, the CTO. Intellisys Capital aims to offer a private investment portfolio in which tokens are issued on the ethereum blockchain. These tokens represent shares in a portfolio of middle market companies.

“Intellisys has built a diversified portfolio management platform for middle market growth equity investments across the United States”, the website reads. “Intellisys is an owner and manager alongside Mainstreet Investment, an investment fund formed to issue the first digital token security in the world backed by real assets and providing concrete investment returns to shareholders. We intend to provide differentiated opportunities that are not available through traditional investment markets.”

This is Shrem’s first venture since his release from prison in June this year. He was the CEO of the now defunct bitcoin exchange BitInstant and was convicted on charges of aiding and abetting the operation of an unlicensed money transmitting business.

Speaking at CoinDesk On Tap in New York today, Shrem said that Intellisys Capital intends to issue tokens representing blockchain-based shares in companies that are profitable and low risk, such as manufacturing, real estate or even sanitary waste. The private equity fund aims to provide transparency to investment portfolios with the immutability of a blockchain and the backing of hard assets.

"We'll be selling ownership and shares in this portfolio of companies on the blockchain, so a token won't be based on speculation. If you own the token, you'll be owning a piece of hard assets, a piece of these companies”, he said.

Blockchain technology will be used to facilitate and administer the decentralized fund, which includes token purchasing, dividend payouts and dissemination of investor information.

“Mainstreet Investment is the first private equity investment offered as a digital ledger security that will change the landscape of middle market investment with a decentralized approach,” said Granger. “Providing liquidity and dividends to investors through the first digital token backed by hard assets will change the landscape of private equity investment on the blockchain.”

Paul Puey, CEO and Co-Founder of Airbitz; Lisa Cheng, founder of The Vanbex Group; Jared Kenna, founder and CEO of Tradehill; and Thomas Holzinger, Asset Manager at JetLevel and General Manager for NEFT Vodka, have been listed as advisors alongside industry veterans Jeremy Lehman and L. Mazzola.

Intellisys Capital is expected to launch in the next few months. It plans to raise funds through the sale of an ethereum-based token called ' Mainstreet Investment Token' (MIT), starting 15th January, 2017 and slated to end April 1, 2017. The MIT will be available to investors that are not U.S. residents, and to U.S. residents that are accredited investors.
