Baskin-Robbins and Nintendo have formed an unlikely partnership to release unique ice cream flavors in Japan. The American multinational chain of ice cream and cake specialty shop restaurants and the Japanese video game company collaborated for the limited-edition “Splatoon” ice cream range.
While odd flavors are common in Japan, where people can find sakura and matcha-flavored sweet treats, Baskin-Robbins and Nintendo’s team-up has created another extraordinary dessert. The Nintendo squid-themed ice cream with ink has been developed and launched in Japan.
As per, SoraNews24, Baskin-Robbins Japan developed a special flavor to mark the upcoming release of “Splatoon 3,” a third-person shooter video game developed and published by Nintendo for its Nintendo Switch hand-held console.
In the game, players are called the Inklings and Octolings who have the ability to morph into squid or octopus form. Once in their humanoid form, they race and glide through walls after splattering their respective inks on them. The goal is to cover an area with as much paint and the team that covered more areas with its own ink color wins.
Since this is what the game is about, Baskin-Robbins created the special ice cream flavors that go well with the “Splatoon 3” video game. The new dessert flavor was released the past weekend to hype things a bit with the Nintendo game’s release that was set for Sept. 9.
Baskin-Robbins Japan debuted the Ikasu and Grape ice cream flavor as part of the celebrations for the release of “Splatoon 3” this week. It was explained that the “Ikasu” is a pun that plays off from the Japanese term “ika” which means “squid.” Ikasu can also have two meanings which are to “look cool and stylish” and “to make skillful use of.”
As mentioned in Nintendo Japan’s press release for the new Baskin-Robbins squid-themed ice cream flavors, the dessert features the vivid main colors of “Splatoon 3” - blue and yellow. The blue and yellow grape-flavored ice cream is accented with pine ribbon and chocolate puff.
The ice cream house is also offering the jelly soda drink, and it features two colors of “ink” that are actually grape and lemon-flavored liquids. These are poured into the soda to make a Splatoon 3-themed jelly drink. The ice cream cups are available for a limited time, and only 310,000 Baskin-Robbins customers across Japan would get the chance to buy and taste them.
