Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers is set to visit Washington this week to meet U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent for discussions, including trade and tariffs. Speaking to ABC television, Chalmers confirmed he would depart on Sunday for one-on-one talks with his U.S. counterpart.
The visit follows a recent phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, during which Trump agreed to consider exempting Australia from U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs. While Chalmers does not expect immediate resolutions, he aims to build on the dialogue regarding trade relations.
Albanese expressed optimism about securing a favorable agreement, citing the strong start to Australia's relationship with the new U.S. administration. Australia, a key U.S. ally in the Indo-Pacific, is a major global exporter of iron ore, the primary raw material for steel production. However, its steel exports are relatively small.
During Trump’s first term, Australia was exempted from U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum. As trade negotiations continue, the outcome of Chalmers’ discussions in Washington could have significant implications for Australia’s export sector.
